Umass Renaissance Scholar to Speak at Julius Caesar Performance

June 17, 2005

Amherst, MA – On Thursday, July 7, Dr. Arthur Kinney, Director of the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies at the University of Massachusetts, will give a pre-show talk about Shakepeare’s Julius Caesar, the opening production in Hampshire Shakespeare Company’s 2005 summer season. Kinney, professor of English and author of many books on Shakespeare, will discuss the play and its ramifications in its own time and in our own at 6:30 PM prior to the performance beginning at 7 PM. In the event of postponement of the performance because of rain, Dr. Kinney’s lecture will be given the following evening on Friday, July 8. The play explores the volatile world of first century BC Roman politics that exploded after one of the most brutal and famous assassinations in history. Shakespeare’s dramatization of these events is celebrated for its astute observations of the nature of political power.

The production features WFCR-FM classical music host Walter Carroll in the title role, with HSC veteran Steve Angel as Brutus and Daniel Kennedy as Cassius. Performances run Wednesday through Sunday at 7 PM from June 24-July 10. All seating is general admission. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 for students and seniors, and $6 for children under 18. Preview night tickets are $10 general admission, $5 for students and seniors.
